Karim Khan Citadel

Karim Khan citadel, commonly known as fortress of Karim Khan, is one of the most prominent reminiscences of the Zand Dynasty from the architectural point of view in Shiraz.

it has been said that the Karim Khan’s castle resembles a medieval fortress since the design of the citadel is a combination of military and residential architecture. There are four circular watchtowers at each corner of the building, one of which on the southeastern side has a distinctive slope like the leaning tower of Pisa. Each tower has three floors with two rooms that have a spiral staircase to the top.

The interior part of the Karim Khan citadel includes porches and rooms, an eye-catching octagonal bathhouse, fountains and gardens that are beautifully decorated and have Persian architectural elements like Muqarnas, stucco works, magnificent miniature decorations, arabesque, floral patterns, splendid flower and bird motifs, tiles, marbles, plaster works and gilded paintings.

It is worth mentioning that there is even an illustration of the famous mythic hero of Shahnameh, also known as The Book of Kings by Ferdowsi amongst the Iranians, killing the White Demon on the gate of the eastern watchtower.
